The common tern Sterna hirundo is quite common in Italy during migrations and in spring-summer, when 4,000-5,000 pairs nest. In winter it is instead of exceptional occurrence. It nests both in coastal wetlands and in the interior, even in artificial environments such as flooded quarries, settling basins and in constructed wetland treatment plants. In the WWF Oasis of Valle Averto it occurs from early April  to the end of September; thanks to the ten artificial rafts made in the LIFE FORESTALL Project, the breeding population has increased from a few pairs to almost 30 in 2021.
