The Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus is present in Italy especially during migrations and in spring-summer when it nests with 3,000-4,000 pairs, increasing in recent years. In winter it is very rare. It frequents wetlands, both coastal and inland, as well as artificial environments such as salt pans, flooded quarries, settling basins. In the WWF Oasis of Valle Averto is present from March to September; 10-15 pairs nest there every year.
