The Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia is present in Italy all year round; it has been nesting there since 1989, currently with 200-250 pairs, slightly increasing in recent years. In winter, there are 800-1000 individuals, again in moderate increase. The Spoonbill mainly uses coastal wetlands, such as fish farms and brackish lagoons. The WWF Oasis of Valle Averto is one of the best sites in the Venice lagoon where to observe this species, occurring with 30-100 individuals along most of the year.
